We have spent a great deal of time with rhinos on month plus long visits to a sanctuary in South Africa. While normally, we are not supporters of zoos in general, the San Diego Zoo Alliance serves a valuable purpose helping to preserve these beautiful animals.

The rhinoceros has a reputation of having an aggressive temper due to their size, horns, and speed. While sometimes the rhinos are upset, they are also extremely nearsighted. Due to their bad sight, rhinos often charge when they are startled which lends to their bad reputation. For most of their life, though, their horns are not used to charge but to dig up roots or branches for food.
