The Venus de Milo is known all over the world. There are many stories about how it was discovered but it was found on the island of Milos in the Aegean Sea. Today, it is believed that this statue is the work of Alexandros of Antioch. The statue eventually traveled to the Louvre where it was introduced to the world.
The reverse side of this coin depicts the birth of Venus – the moment when the artist first created the masterpiece that would become world renowned. The statue reflects female beauty, elegance and infinite delicacy. To this day, it is still unknown why the statue is armless. The high relief of this coin reflects the texture of the carved marble.
