The United States Coast Guard is the largest and most powerful coast guard in the world, rivaling the capabilities and size of most navies. Though not part the nation’s Department of Defense, the Coast Guard is still one of the country’s six military service branches and falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security. The Coast Guard is tasked with enforcing the nation’s laws at sea, protecting the marine environment, guarding the nation’s vast coastline and ports, and performing vital lifesaving missions. To pay tribute to this branch of America’s Armed Forces, the U.S. Mint has released this commemorative medal as part of its Armed Forces Silver Medals Program that’s loaded with enough detail to satisfy any military history buff.
This action-packed medal depicts a Coast Guard cutter speeding head-on toward the viewer. The inscriptions “U.S. COAST GUARD,” and the Coast Guard motto “SEMPER PARATUS,” (always ready) are arced around the upper border. The hull number—753—identifies the vessel as the USCGC Hamilton (WMSL-753), a Legend-class cutter named for Alexander Hamilton that was launched in 2013. The reverse design features two iconic symbols of the Coast Guard, a life preserver ring and the racing stripe mark, which is found on almost all Coast Guard craft. The racing stripes are depicted with a heraldic hatching tradition to indicate color, with horizontal lines indicating the color blue and vertical lines indicating red. The Coast Guard emblem, which is part of the racing stripe mark, is also in the center. Inscribed around the border of the design are the core values of the Coast Guard: “HONOR,” “RESPECT,” and “DEVOTION TO DUTY.”
