A fitting representation of Africa’s natural heritage of strength and beauty, these “Big 5” game animals include the lion, leopard, black rhinoceros, African bush elephant, and the African buffalo.
The obverse shows a small depiction of the Big 5 walking single file next to an African baobab tree. The phrase “AFRICA BIG 5” is inscribed in the coin’s center, right above the Coat of arms of Chad. The weight, purity, and denomination are also shown on the obverse.
The reverse displays a spectacular collage of the Big 5 animals, uniquely shaped to form the continent of Africa. The lion’s face looks out from West Africa with its mane extending into Northern Africa. The leopard stares ahead from the region of West Africa as well as Central Africa. The buffalo sternly gazes over the Eastern side of North Africa; while the elephant extends its tusks over Eastern Africa. Lastly, the mighty black rhino stands firm in Southern Africa.

It’s Here!! What a fascinating representation of a fascinating animal. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to feed a young hippo and her Mom at an orphanage. Something I’ll never forget!
For me, the black proof quality of these wildlife coins presents a meaningful depiction of the fragility of the animal pictured. This was true for the Eagle and the Wolf coins and is certainly true for the Ram.
