The Krugerrand was introduced in silver for the first time in 2017 as part of its 50^th anniversary celebration. The Springbok depicted on the reverse of the Krugerrand is one of South Africa’s most recognized national symbols. Springboks are capable of pronking, which involves the antelope springing high into the air with stiff legs, a rounded back and bowed head. It is believed that pronking occurs when the animals are frightened or excited. On the obverse of the Krugerrand is the effigy is a figure of renown in South Africa, Paul Kruger.
