Rwanda’s 2021 entry in its popular Nautical series features the famous STS Sedov, one of the most beautiful windjammers ever to sail the seven seas and the biggest training tall ship in the world! It’s a fitting tribute as 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the ship’s launching from its port in Russia.
Minted in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% silver, this 50 Francs legal-tender coin is a stunning vision of the ship that trains hundreds of cadets each year. Not only does it show the Sedov slicing through waves with its sails unfurled, but the ship is depicted against a field that includes a design of a compass rose and navigational lines. Plus, each coin available here comes in original Gem Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition with razor-sharp details that are as sharp and crisp as the day they left the mint! In addition, the coin has been struck with a unique antique High Relief finish. The High Relief designs provide a deep three-dimensional appearance that is further accentuated by the antiqued finish that furnishes an elegant, aged effect.
When it first set sail in 1921, the Sedov was dedicated exclusively dedicated to the transport of goods. A sleek-looking four-masted steel barque, Sedov was the largest traditional sailing ship in operation for almost 80 years. Today it operates as a training vessel for cadets from Russia’s Marine Academies and Colleges. Still impressive a century later, Sedov can accommodate up to 320 people on board among which 75 are crew members and around 100 cadets. As a windjammer, it can still carry sails even in a storm and maintain a high speed.
